Why DHA Is Critical for Your Child's Brain Development

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is the most abundant omega-3 fatty acid in the human brain, accounting for roughly 97 percent of all omega-3s found in neural tissue. It is a structural component of cell membranes in the cerebral cortex — the region responsible for memory, language, attention, and problem-solving. The European Food Safety Authority has confirmed that DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function, with a daily intake of at least 250 milligrams recommended for adults.

For children aged 3 to 12, the stakes are even higher. The brain undergoes rapid myelination during this period, wrapping nerve fibres in a fatty sheath that accelerates signal transmission. A 2019 meta-analysis in Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids reviewed 16 randomised controlled trials and found that DHA supplementation improved reading performance, working memory, and reduced parent-reported behavioural difficulties in school-age children.

The challenge is delivery. Traditional fish-oil softgels are large, have a strong taste, and deliver DHA in ethyl-ester form — the least bioavailable configuration. Genevia's Genius uses a patented self-emulsifying delivery system that converts DHA into a triglyceride form. Independent pharmacokinetic testing shows this achieves 44 percent higher bioavailability compared to standard softgel capsules, meaning more DHA reaches the bloodstream per milligram consumed.

Each Genius soft chew delivers 260 milligrams of DHA and 52 milligrams of EPA — three times more omega-3 than typical children's gummy vitamins. The formula also includes Vitamin D at 200 percent of the Nutrient Reference Value, Quatrefolic methylfolate (the most bioavailable form of folate), and iodine for thyroid-supported cognitive development. There is no added sugar, stevia, or artificial ingredients; sweetness comes from natural flavouring.

Each soft chew is individually sealed in oxygen-free packaging, eliminating the need for preservatives while maintaining freshness and preventing the oxidation that causes fishy aftertaste. The omega-3 oil inside carries IFOS 5-star certification — the highest rating for purity, oxidation, and heavy-metal contamination — verified by Nutrasource in Guelph, Canada.

Paediatricians increasingly recommend omega-3 supplementation for children who do not eat oily fish at least twice per week. With rising rates of screen time and sedentary behaviour, supporting cognitive development through nutrition has never been more relevant. Genius was designed to make that supplementation simple, effective, and something children actually look forward to taking.
